“The Noticer” Book Review

September 11, 2009 by Mara Burke · Leave a Comment

I just finished reading “The Noticer: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective” by Andy Andrews, published by Thomas Nelson. What a wonderful book, an easy read, but one that gives the reader cause to think.

The book claims to be based on a true story, so I thought it was like an autobiography of sorts. However, there were elements within the story that definitely leaned more toward fiction. In the end, I believe it’s just plain old good story telling that combines reality and fantasy in an artful way.

The characters of the story are people you may know no matter if you live on the coast of Alabama (where the story is set) or anywhere else. They are common people who are down on their luck, feel like failures, or feel they have nothing left to give. They doubt their ability to make decisions or feel like the ones they have made have all been wrong. The characters are you and me at any point in our lives.

However, the character Jones (not Mr. Jones) shows up at a pivotal point in each person’s life. He helps them see things from a different perspective which always has a positive, life-changing affect. The book may have a life-changing affect on you, as well, as you get a glimpse of this mysterious man and how he helps people to think of and look at things a little differently.

Included in the book are questions which can be used for a Bible study, small group, or simply to discuss among friends. The questions, as well as the book, are thought-provoking and encourage serious consideration into how you can change your life with a shift in your perspective.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever struggled with indecision, self-doubt, or confusion. You may not receive an epiphany from reading this book, but it will definitely give you something to think about.
